Well, we planned on going through Broken Hill  - for a month, we have been looking forward to the delights of Cobar and the surrounding districts. Then Zan said (this morning, at breakfast)  'Let's go along the river. It's nicer.'
So we did. Tonight, we are absolute riverfront at Bunarong, NSW, looking with satisfaction at the bright lights and bustle of Mildura's wharf. Two weddings-a in-a town-a   today. Saw the themed mauve and orange dresses and starched-up blokes in same colours. Saw the Hummers with the colours on the stumpy bonnet.  And from here we can see the bridge, being crossed by a procession of mobile circus acts masquerading as Kenworths.  Private houseboats ply the mirror river. We know they're private because the hireboats are forbidden to be 'on the water' after dark, perhaps because the hirers know the drivers have probably been 'on the turps' all day.
Tomorrow we know we will wake early because there are eight or nine kookaburras roosting in the monster redgum alongside us. They arrived in a silent squadron and then sounded 'lights out' at six twenty three (NSW time). I'd guess the sun will reach their penthouse suite before it breaks through down here on the docks and they will want everyone to hear about their upper-class circumstances.  We have no neighbours either side, nor behind nor in front. $25 a dah apparently affords us complete privilege but goodness knows why. With 40 in the van tyres, at Blue's insistence, we just flew away from Clare, and the new fuel gadget gauge tells me for the first time of the financial reality involved in driving round Australia. For the first time it doesn't seem like a good idea at all. Flying Extra Virgin would be cheaper, though I know the disadvantages. There are no obnoxious brats, young  or old, in Jethro's spacious seating.
I'd show you more, and write some too, but our internet speed here is slower than dial-up and Zan gave up trying to find out about parks in Narradera. We'll have to just chance it.

Stand by for more - if the bit-rate allows it.
LOOK, MA - NO NEIGHBOURS!
Miind you, there WERE nine kookaburras in this tree.
And at 06:29 am they sounded Reveille.

Great reception - there's the repeater tower here at Mildura.
The signal seems to get held up in customs as it tries to cross into NSW.

The only 'Melbourne' actually successfully 'floating' this season.
Being steam powered and burning wood, it is running hot when others are not.

  1. Glad to see you two are finally underway and sounding very relaxed too. Yup, it's not cheap to haul a van around our "great brown land" but it's great fun and worth the pennies. S
